Buenos Aires Café
86 Royal Hill, Greenwich, SE10 8RT, London
This café in Greenwich is inspired by the food and drink traditions of Argentina. It is one of the very few places in London where you can drink mate, a traditional Argetinian beverage.
DID YOU KNOW?
Mate is a traditional drink in Argentina (and other South American countries) made from an infusion of dried leaves of yerba mate, which is not strictly a tea. It is served in a hollow gourd along with a metal drinking straw called a "bombilla".
There are many different recipes for making mate and how to drink it.
In Argentina, mate is drunk in social settings (such as family gatherings or with friends) with elaborate drinking rituals. One person has the role of server, filling the gourd and drinking all the mate to test its quality. The server then passes the re-filled gourd to the next drinker who also drinks it all. This continues until the mate has become flat or washed out.
